Digital painting tutorial w/ Photoshop. Starting with shadows, we paint the light sources. Ultimately this is easier, and gives the image a more natural look in the end.

There is also a quick video tutorial here: [link]

Wow, thank you for this! I've been fussing with realistic skin for a while, and I think you've just about solved my problem(and a couple others unintentionally)! :thumb86964716: Thanks again!

Oh, no worries, man! Glad you found in useful. I just learned this technique a few days ago. I just did another portrait with the same technique [link] just trying to get the hang of it myself!
I am about to say a) What you've definitely heard before, and b) what you've maybe heard before...

a) This tutorial is totally awesome!!!

b) ...you seriously look a lot like someone I know... :O

Hehe, thanks so much! I'm glad you liked it! I'm going to edit the tutorial, though, as I forgot to include something very important when drawing skin: subsurface refactoring. It's basically why skin has a red glow where the light peters off, due to the fact that your epidermis sits on a layer of red stuff.
Ahhhh.... yeas, the whole "ambiance" feel... right?

A very well done tutorial. I love seeing how everyone has a different technique for painting skin. One question though....when you changed the background, what did you do to remove the purple color that you used as a base for your skin shadows?

Cheers!
